Cathodic protection signal measurement

The effectiveness of the Cathodic Protection system can be assessed by potential measurements i.e. measurements of the actual potential at the pipe to soil interface with respect to a reference electrode. When measurements are made with the Cathodic Protection system on, an “IR drop” error is introduced which may erroneously indicate that a pipelines potential is sufficiently negative to ensure protection. By using instantaneous-off-potential technique the “IR-drop” caused by the protective current can be eliminated.
